First-Time Visitors to Mexico
Start in Cancún — the international airport, the widest range of accommodation, and every major Riviera Maya experience within day-trip distance. Use the Hotel Zone as your base and the coast as your classroom. Move to Playa del Carmen for nights 4 and 5 if you want a town instead of a resort.
Divers and Snorkellers
Mahahual for the healthiest section of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef — and Banco Chinchorro, the largest atoll in the Northern Hemisphere, as a day trip. Cozumel (accessed by ferry from Playa del Carmen) for one of the top 5 dive sites in the world. Puerto Morelos for easy reef snorkelling with national park protection.
